12 – The Forest in Nivernais – Coalmen – Coal bagging

The twelfth postcard of the series “The Forest in Nivernais” depicts a coalman bagging coal after its combustion in charcoal kiln.

When the combustion is completed, coalman undoes the kiln, being attentive to extinguish fires. Coal is then packed in 50 kg bags and production is dragged by horse-drawn carriage. Coal bags carry the inscription “V. Berthelin à Cosne”.

Achille Millien complements the postcard with verses of poetry about the hardship of the coalman profession and about bagging coal before shipping: “Allons ! Tout va bien que l’on mette / Le charbon au sac en chantant ! / Lorsque la besogne est bien faite, / L’ouvrier a le cœur content / Et la Misère qui le guette / S’oublie alors pour un instant !
